What is Thyroglobulin (ICMA)?
Thyroglobulin is the protein precursor of T3 and T4 synthesized exclusively by thyroid follicular cells; in patients with an intact thyroid, serum Tg reflects gland activity and integrity, with elevations seen in Hashimoto thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis, nodular goiter, and thyroid cancer. (Note: in post-thyroidectomy cancer surveillance a much tighter threshold — typically <1–2 ng/mL — applies.)
