Selenium, Serum

Selenium, Serum is a clinical biomarker on the Nutrients panel, reported in ug/L. Standard reference range: 63–160 ug/L. Functional (optimal) range used by integrative practitioners: 70–121 ug/L.

What is Selenium, Serum?

Serum selenium reflects short-term selenium status. Selenium is incorporated into selenoproteins including glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and thyroid deiodinases; adequate status is required for antioxidant defense, T4→T3 conversion, and immune function. Serum selenium responds within days to weeks of intake change; RBC selenium is a better marker of longer-term status.
