What is Homocysteine?

Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid intermediate produced during methionine metabolism; it is remethylated back to methionine (requiring folate, B12) or catabolized via the transsulfuration pathway (requiring B6). Elevated plasma homocysteine is an independent risk marker for atherosclerosis, thrombosis, neurocognitive decline, and endothelial dysfunction.
