What is Copper, Serum?
Serum copper reflects short-term copper status. Copper is a cofactor for ceruloplasmin, cytochrome c oxidase, lysyl oxidase (connective tissue), superoxide dismutase (SOD1/3), and dopamine β-hydroxylase; ~85–95% of circulating copper is bound to ceruloplasmin. Serum copper rises as an acute-phase reactant and with estrogen (OCPs, pregnancy) independent of true tissue status.
